WIP Artwork ~ The Making of Lum from Urusei Yatsura

(Updated 2/17/2021)

It was only a matter of time before I’d start tackling the original waifu herself, Lum from Urusei Yatsura. This is actually the second character I’d draw from the manga/anime series, with the first one being Ataru’s Mother. Lum herself was a long time coming thanks to the likes of Artzie Music and her being the unofficial mascot for the Future Funk/Vaporwave channel. I also picked up the Urusei Yatsura manga from Viz and have been reading each new volume close to their release since the beginning.

Anyway, let’s talk about this sketch. Her design is relatively simple with her iconic tiger-stripe bikini. The one big difference between her manga and anime counterparts is her hair. In the manga, judging by its many colors on each volume’s cover, it’s iridescent. On the flipside, the anime depicts it as green. I’d imagine the studio artists did that to reduce workload with having to color her hair different colors every so often and settled on a green color. It’s this color hair that she’s become for well known for. The final decision for which hair color to go with for the full pic falls down to me then. While I could go for her more familiar green hair, it’d be a shame to not draw her iridescent style as it doesn’t get a lot of love in the fanart space. It’d certainly be easier for me to do digitally than with the Faber Castell brush pens.
