“Shall we dance?”
“Let’s”
Self Critique: I’ll admit, something about how I did the fabric of Squigly’s top wasn’t jiving well with me. Maybe I smoothed out the fabric too much and should’ve held back on the darker shades.
Here’s another commission from DagobahResident, once again going back to the world of Skullgirls with Squigly. The idea for the pose was to make one based on one of her Win poses, but from behind of course. This gave me another opportunity to do a butt shot, which I don’t get to do often. Executing the nude variant was a no-brainer, save for her back. While we’re on the subject of that, the new workflow I adopted since the Sonia Belmont pic is definitely paying off. I knew that her back would be the biggest issue here, so I skipped it until I finished every other part related to her skin. On the clothed variant, I did get slightly concerned at first with how to draw the skirt with legs crossed. But knowing that the outfit clinged tight, I just had to put my faith in the lines, the original pose from the game, and the shading to get the message across.
I do wanna spend some time talking about Leviathan, the snake thing coming out of her head and holding her up. I wasn’t sure how exactly I’d execute the shading on Leviathan. I was gonna shade him the “normal” way like everything else I do. But I thought back to that “Inked Shadow” style I did on him during the Concept Sketch, which was inspired by the way comic artists do shadows in comic books. Since his body was cylindrical, I experimented on Leviathan with some black fineliners and brush pens I bought some time ago to get a grasp of that shading style, with no expectation of doing it when the actual pic began. But it still looked cool, and it would’ve been a waste to not try. At first I was going to incorporate that dark shadow style during the shading process. But early attempts complicated matters and would’ve made smoothing with the watercolor brushes too difficult. I figured that maybe I should do this style during the Filters and Effects phase since everything else would be established by then and it’d be on its own layer. So I shaded him normally, then gave dark shadows a shot on the area near his head, and sure enough this was the path to go. So I did it on the rest of his body to great results!
Overall pleased with how this pic turned out.
Done on Clip Studio Paint Pro. Wacom Cintiq 16 tablet used. Body-chan traced for construction lines, then drawn freehand the rest of the way.
