Become one with the hive mind!
Self Critique: Not so much of a critique on the image per se, but I realize that I’m gonna have to do studies on the crotch and hip-bone area. I had to go back and fix the “indent” of the inner thighs some time after I finished shading in the rest of the body.
And now I enter the foray of Rick & Morty artwork. I was commissioned by DagobahResident to do Unity from the show (he earlier commissioned my Valentine pic). There’s multiple versions of this (unless you’re seeing this on DeviantArt, which you’ll only see two). I was told to do a clean-ish version where she’s clothed, and three nude variants, at a low angle (and in the case of the the last two versions, from Rick’s POV). Knew right away I had to get both of my Body-Chan and Body-Kun models out to make this happen. And sure enough it worked! The whole shading process was in simple shade. This gave me a chance to do more practice with the watercolor bush for fabric. And as I expected, it’s better to do the Airbrush + Watercolor combo for applying and smoothing. The old method (Airbrush + Smudge) made things too blurry and overly smooth. The lowest shade would still get smoothed down to a gradient. But the rest would get smoothed with the watercolor and have different levels of fortitude (if that’s the right word to use) depending on direct shadows from folds and ambient light sources.
I did also take this chance to once again practice shading in skin pressing (which is obviously the boob). The outfit worked well with the folds of the tanktop on the clothed version. On the nude version, while the positioning of the boob is kinda off, I feel I did a good enough job with the skin folds and the shading were the fingers directly interact.
If you’re wondering why Unity has two different nipples, it might make more sense if you watch the episode “Auto Erotic Assimilation” (S2E3). To make a long story short, there’s two groups of the hivemind, each with their own nipple shape. I was told to draw both types on this part of Unity (which seems to be the default entity of the hivemind).
Done on Clip Studio Paint. Intuos4 Tablet used. Body-Chan and Body-Kun models traced for schematic skeleton, then drawn freehand the rest of the way.
